Ephraim Wells, grandson of Sistersville founder Charles Wells, established the Hotel Wells in 1894 shortly after the discovery of oil in this area. Many hotels and boardinghouses were available for the roust-abouts, oilmen and fortune seekers, who descended upon Sistersville during the turn of the century oil boom. However, few facilities were available for the oil barons and genteel travelers and residents of the area. Wells built this Hotel to serve this clientele. The foundation was laid in April of 1894 and the Hotel opened its doors to the public on January 15, 1895. The *Sistersville Daily Review* the leading newspaper of the area noted, *The banquet and ball which celebrated the Hotel opening was one of the notable events of the century.* Throughout the years, statesmen, business people, and professionals from all around the world have enjoyed the comforts and gracious elegance of the Hotel Wells, later known as the Wells Inn. It became a favorite gathering place for residents as well as visitors to the area. It became, we believe, a special place. The grand old gal still looks good. A restoration investment of over one million dollars has allowed the Hotel to enhance its visitor services to include a restaurant, an indoor pool and jacuzzi, an exercise and fitness area, a full service spa and a pub. Visitors to the Wells Inn can make use of conference facilities both at the Hotel and across the street at the Gaslight Theater and Conference Center.
