Madras is surrounded by the high desert terrain and mountain peaks of the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness Area. Join us for rock hounding, trail exploration or white water rafting on the Deschutes River. The Deschutes River, one of Oregon's most prolific trout streams flows through the heart of Jefferson County and lures thousands of anglers every year. Haystack Reservoir angling for 10-14 inch Rainbow Trout is fair, small numbers of 2-3 pound brown trout are present. Lake Billy Chinook, one of Central Oregon's premiere vacation spots, is also a great place to take out the rod and reel and go fishing. The Metolius River is restricted to catch and release only for all species. Lake Simtustus: Angling for 8 to 11 inch rainbow trout is fair. Lake Billy Chinook- the Cove Palisades State Park is central Oregon's year-round recreational destination for the entire family. Jefferson County is in the center of winter fun for cross-country and alpine skiers, snow boarders, snowmobiles, sledders and everyone who likes playing in the snow. Madras Bowl is located in the City of Madras and offers more than bowling. Two 18 hole golf courses are situated around the county, offering a variety of challenges for both beginner and expert. The courses are located at Kah-Nee-Ta Resort on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation and Crooked River Ranch. There is also a driving range in Madras and a nine-hole course at Nine Peaks Golf Course. All are open to public play with reasonable green fees.
